director at rsa films
After spending years filming the families fleeing the Syrian civil war, filmmaker Alexander Farrell is ready to debut his documentary, Refugee, that captures their stories. Three years in the making, it charts both Farrell and the Alali family and their arduous walk through ten countries to find refuge from the horrors they fled in Syria. Starting in Turkey with a small crew of filmmaker friends, along their journey they added Bowling for Columbine executive producer Kurt Engfehr. Farrell who was often filming alone, says the experience “totally changed me. It makes you realise that we are incredible in our endurance. When we work together beautiful things happen. Humans have such a capability to survive.”
