Sherry Collins’ childhood stories: Life Lessons Learned

From the ages of six to thirteen, Sherry Collins grew up in the hills of St. Ann, Jamaica, surrounded by family, community, nature, and the simple experiences that would shape her view of the world.

Through a collection of personal stories, Sherry Collins reflects on the lessons learned during her childhood, from walking country roads and spending time by the river to helping neighbours, listening to elders, navigating challenges, and discovering the power of creativity, kindness, resilience, and community.

These stories are not simply memories; they are life lessons that continue to influence her work today as the founder of The Pitch Fanzine. They offer insights into the values, people, and experiences that helped shape her belief in education, creativity, opportunity, and the importance of investing in future generations.

At their heart, these stories celebrate the wisdom found in everyday life and the enduring influence of growing up in rural Jamaica.

Why bother about racism?

Because if we do not bother about racism, we risk overlooking talented people whose ideas, experiences, and perspectives could help guide us towards a better, fairer, and more thoughtful world.

When barriers prevent people from being seen, heard, or valued, we all lose. We lose creativity, innovation, leadership, and the opportunity to learn from one another.

In these articles, Sherry Collins shares her experiences of growing up in London as a teenager, her early career in production, and the insights she has gained from studying the UK advertising and creative industries over the past eleven years.

Through her story, she explores why representation matters, what progress has been made, and why creating opportunities for people from all backgrounds benefits everyone.
