And save the planet.

With a rare combination of engineering precision, strategic thinking, and creative vision, Andrea Dempster Chung has become one of the key architects of Kingston’s cultural transformation.

As Co-founder and Executive Director of Kingston Creative, Andrea has led a bold movement to reimagine Downtown Kingston through the power of the arts. What began as an idea has grown into a thriving Cultural District, with initiatives such as the Artwalk Festival, murals, creative meetups, incubators, accelerators, and cultural events. There is even a physical Creative Hub, a space for artists, entrepreneurs, and communities to connect and thrive.

But Andrea’s journey into the creative industries did not follow a traditional path.

Trained as a structural engineer, with degrees from leading institutions in the United States, Andrea began her career designing large-scale infrastructure projects in Miami and Washington DC. Later, returning home and into senior leadership roles across organisations, including the Ministry of Water and Housing, Digicel, and GraceKennedy, managing multimillion-dollar budgets, leading transformation programmes, and delivering measurable impact across international markets.

From negotiating major public-private joint-venture housing developments to leading cost-transformation initiatives that delivered millions in savings, Andrea developed a deep understanding of how systems work and how to rebuild them. Today, Andrea applies that same expertise to the creative industries.

Andrea’s work sits at the intersection of culture, urban planning, and economic development. She has led the UK government’s arts portfolio in Jamaica through the British Council, building partnerships between Jamaican and international creatives across film, literature, festivals, and the visual arts. She continues to operate on a global stage through her roles on the Global Creative Economy Council in the UK and the Advisory Board of the Global Cultural Districts Network.

At the same time, her entrepreneurial spirit is reflected in the businesses that she started, notably Bookophilia, the independent bookstore she founded to champion Caribbean literature and provide a space for cultural exchange and storytelling.

Andrea’s leadership extends beyond organisations into people. As a business coach, she has supported creative entrepreneurs through programmes including the Branson Centre of Entrepreneurship, Jamaica National’s SEBI initiative, and ASPIRE in Barbados, helping others build sustainable careers in the creative industries. Now she leads Entrepreneur Support programmes with the Development Bank of Jamaica, with a focus on the creative industries.

Her work has not gone unnoticed. Andrea has been recognised internationally, including being featured in Forbes as one of ten women leading the charge for a sustainable future in Jamaica through the development of its creative industries.

At The Pitch Fanzine, the Pitch Amazing Jamaicans campaign celebrates individuals who are building industries, creating opportunities, and shaping Jamaica's future. Andrea represents a new kind of leadership, one that combines creativity with strategy, and vision with execution.

Andrea is not only supporting Jamaica’s creative industries. She is helping to build the systems that allow them to thrive.
