The untold story

They came a long time ago

Expecting a new island

With streets paved with gold

As they waited on boats day and night

Nothing could prepare them for the welcome they were about to receive.

They came afar from tropical islands

Where the palm trees swayed in the wind

And you had your sugar cane and coconut water

While the tide came in

They were happy back home in the peace and quiet

But one day, the message came

So, they packed up their bags and went on an adventure

But nothing could prepare them for what would come their way

As the days passed

And the weather got colder

They suddenly realised they weren’t at home

But a new place entirely

When they came, all hell broke loose

Some of the people were mean

Some of them didn’t even speak to you

But that didn’t stop them from having saltfish and callaloo

As the days turned to weeks

And weeks into months

And months became years

Never did they regret coming to England

For the Windrush generation, who were true pioneers
