Meet Greg Francis, Writer and Film Director, 1 Up.
Greg Francis is a British-born writer and film director from South East London with Jamaican heritage.
Greg has had a deep love affair with music and film since his early childhood, which has greatly influenced the directions he's chosen in life.
Writing and film directing have become the main driving forces for his passions today.
While working at RSA Films, Greg shadowed many of his favourite directors, including Ridley Scott, who taught him a great deal about the mechanics of the business and inspired him to pick up the camera, create his path, and use his visual voice.
Greg filmed and edited productions for up-and-coming music artists across London, creating with some of the UK's most prominent: Dizzee Rascal, Skepta, Little Mix, and Lethal Bizzle.
His music videos have been viewed by millions on YouTube.
Eventually, Greg moved into more narrative storytelling; creating documentaries and writing and directing short films which have gone on to great global acclaim with numerous nominations, award wins, and having his work displayed in art exhibitions.
Greg’s short film Infinity was nominated for Best Thriller at the Cannes Film Awards in 2024.
Greg’s most recent short film, 1 Up, in partnership with Hatch Films CIC and Them Ones Productions, and produced by Tobi Kyeremateng, tackles the themes of family, bereavement, and mental health in the Black community.
With cinematography by Dominic Lake, 1 Up has been nominated at some of the industry's most respected festivals and is currently the number one film on American Airline’s ABFF Channel.
Greg loves capturing the vast spectrum of daily interactions and the human experience, whether through the prism of a social drama, a psychological thriller, mental health, or the purity of love.
As a writer and director, Greg Francis endeavours to make films that resonate with his audience and touch their soul.
The Pitch Fanzine is collaborating with Greg Francis on the Pitch Futures Knowledge-sharing Creative Class with secondary school Pitch Futures students: final years (age 16) and 6th formers (age 18) in Hackney, London.
Greg Francis will share his short film and talk on mental health in the creative industries.
